A Little About Our Family...

A Little About Our Family...

We have been together for 12 years, and married for almost 5. During that time, Chad served 7 years in the US Army as a linguist, training at the Defense Language Institute in California, being stationed in Germany, and serving 2 tours in Iraq where he was awarded a Bronze Star.

After the Army, we married and decided to finally enjoy having our time together, as well as being able to focus on our family (we are blessed with 2 handsome boys). Since we've always valued education, it was a no-brainer that Chad attend college and get a degree. The Post 9/11 GI Bill allowed him a great opportunity to do that, as it pays for your schooling, as well as giving students book stipends and monthly allowance for housing and living expenses, which depend on the location of your school and how many dependents you have. He should graduate in December (he is a history major with a minor in foreign language), if all goes as planned.

Now the monthly allowance from the VA hasn't shown up, with no explanation as to how or why this has happened, and this is effecting GI Bill students all over the region.... I think the public needs to know this happened, so here is our story. Just remember that we are just one story in thousands...

About a week later...

So, here we are...a little over a week later, but still no pay.  We have done a lot on our end, and hopefully it will make a difference.

So far, we have:

  • Posted to many friends and acquaintances over Facebook to get the word out and find out who else it is affecting.
  • Posted to Reddit.com, trying to (again) see how far this has spread.
  • Contacted Congressman Tierney's office, to which I got a very quick response from a case worker (who is also a veteran, no less).  I went down today (10/9) to sign a Privacy Act statement for them to fight on my behalf
    • He said, if all goes well, this will help to take me out of the "General Pile", which is just about everyone, to the "Congressional Pile", which are priority cases, because the Congress is bugging them about it because they are creating an extreme financial hardship.
  • Contacted Senator Brown's office, to which I got an automated response, and I sent in a Privacy Act form via snail mail.  The case worker at Congressman Tierney's office said, though (nothing against them), that they are usually very slow in that office, dealing with these sorts of things.
  • Called more than once to the VA Hotline, and I would wait for such a long time (30+ minutes) to even get through, or not able to get through at all.
  • Went on NECN.  Erin and I explained at length what was going on, however, they only used a small part of what we said.  Congressman Tierney was on the commercial as well.
We are trying hard to see if we can make it through the month...
